Examples of how HECToR has helpded individual research groups.

Materials Chemistry Consortium Highlights

MCC has played a major role in UK computational science and, since its foundation in 1994, has exploited the latest developments in HPC technologies, in a wide ranging programme of development, optimisation and applications studies aimed at modelling and predicting the structures, properties and reactivities of functional materials, including catalysts, ceramics, minerals and molecular materials. The programme embraces both large scale simulations based on forcefields and electronic structure techniques employing Density Functional Theory, Hartree Fock and hybrid techniques. Strong emphasis is placed on code development and optimisation for MPP platforms while several applications highlight systems of industrial importance. There is strong symbiosis between the modelling studies of the consortium and experimental programmes.

Quantum Monte Carlo and the CASINO program : scaling to hundreds of thousands of computer cores

Availability of petascale computers having tens or hundreds of thousands of cores is opening up completely new possibilities for the techniques of Quantum Monte Carlo. The capabilities of the UK HECToR machine have been fundamental in allowing UK researchers to demonstrate this.

Investigating new green chemical compounds

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are being proposed as "green" compounds, clean and safe. However, to fully justify this label, it would be better to understand their effect on basic biological structure, such as the lipid bilayers that surround cells. The computations conducted by scientists at Queen's University Belfast clarify many aspects of these interactions.

Solving the Mystery of Car Battery's Current

Chemists have solved the 150 year-old mystery of what gives the lead-acid battery, found under the bonnet of most cars, its unique ability to deliver a surge of current. A team of researchers from Oxford University, the University of Bath, Trinity College Dublin, and the ISIS neutron spallation source, have explained for the first time the fundamental reason for the high conductivity of lead dioxide.

CASCADE: Cloud System Resolving Modelling of the Tropical Atmosphere

Strong surface heating by the sun in the tropics is communicated to the atmosphere through the process of convection; this is responsible for significant amounts of tropical rainfall and plays a pivotal role in the heat and moisture budgets of the tropical climate system. Convection manifests itself through scales from the size of an individual cloud through the mesoscale and up to the synoptic and planetary scales, so in order to represent these scale interactions in a model, it must cover a sizeable fraction of the Earth in order to capture the planetary/synoptic, yet be able to resolve km-sized single clouds. The CASCADE project (NERC Reference: NE/E00525X/1) was devised to investigate these phenomena by means of very large high-resolution simulations.

New tricks from old oil: what can biofuels learn from the catalysis of crude oil formation?

The quest for non-fossil based fuels is highly topical to the issue of climate change and yet, to be able to design efficient alternatives - particularly in the form of biofuels - requires an investigation into the formation of fossil oil itself. The exact chemical process of how this organic life, crushed and encased within clay minerals, is converted into oil or hydrocarbons remains inexactly identifed. Determining the stages involved in this process has the potential to beneft the production of biofuels due to the similarity of the molecules that form the hydrocarbons. Such an investigation of a chem ical pathway necessitates an examination of the atoms and their electrons from a quantum mechanical, simulation perspective, which is achievable using density functional theory (DFT), planewaves and pseudopotentials within the CASTEP code. This approach is computationally expensive but feasible due to the facilities provided by HECToR and has resulted in the identi cation of a clay mineral environment that has the catalytic potential to convert a fatty acid into an alkane.

Solving the Mystery of Hydrogen Bonds

Hydrogen (H) bonds are essential to life on earth. Deuterium is the most common isotope of H and when H-bonds involve deuterium rather than H something strange happens: some get longer, some get shorter and some show no change at all. This behaviour has remained an enigma since its first detection in the 1950s. In their paper Li et al. solve this puzzle by showing that the influence isotope effects have - and in essence quantum effects - on H-bonds depends on their strength: strong H-bonds get stronger and weak H-bonds get weaker. This surprisingly simple finding is arrived at on the basis of state-of-the-art computer simulations on the UKs largest supercomputer (HECToR).

Forecasting Faster: Configuring and Optimising the Weather Research and Forecast Model for Maximum Performance

Understanding and predicting the behaviour of the Earth's atmosphere and weather systems is a very complex problem and has historically always exercised the leading High Performance Computing resources available at any one time. The significant usage of HECToR for atmosphere-related simulation work continues this trend and the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Model accounts for a large part of this. In this HECToR dCSE project, scientists have investigated various ways in which the performance of WRF on Phase 2a of HECToR may be improved.

Virtual palaeontology: gait reconstruction of extinct vertebrates using high performance computing

The team of scientists - from The University of Manchester, University of Oregon and Yale have been using HECToR to understand how dinosaurs moved. They found that hopping hadrosaurs were fastest but, for safety reasons, a two-legged running gait was most likely. In addition the team, funded by National Geographic and The Natural Environment Research Council, has shown how more research can be done to find out how large and fast animals moved, both living and extinct.

Improving the Modelling of Cardiac Arrythmia

Medical science is increasingly turning to computational models to study the possible effects of drugs and surgical interventions, before moving on to patient trials. One active area of research is in heart modelling. Researchers at the Oxford e-Research Centre (OeRC) and EPCC (University of Edinburgh), will be using HECToR to optimise heart-modelling software. If successful, this work will enable much greater integration of computer simulation with the operating theatre and could, ultimately, lead to personalised medicine.

SPRINT - parallel statistics using R

Gene analysis is becoming increasingly complex and can be greatly enhanced by exploiting the power of high-performance computing (HPC), but the software can be difficult for researchers to use. To allow greater access to the benefits of HPC, EPCC and the Division of Pathway Medicine at the University of Edinburgh developed a prototype framework called SPRINT, which allows biostatisticians to more easily exploit HPC systems.

Novel computing in fight against cancer

National Cancer Registration data indicate that some 35,000 people each year are diagnosed with colorectal cancer (cancer of the large bowel and rectum) and 16,000 die from the disease. While the development of effective treatments is clearly important, early identification of patients at risk and prevention is a primary objective of all major cancer agencies and of National Health Service policy. Armed with first access to an unprecedented set of genomic data in colorectal cancer, the University of Edinburgh Colon Cancer Genetics Group (CCGG) and EPCC Supercomputing Centre teamed up to investigate the relationship between genetic markers and colorectal cancer.

Fasten your seatbelts: Turbulent patches in oceans and atmospheres

The presence of patches of turbulent fluid within atmospheric or oceanic flows is well known (not least to aircraft passengers). Wave breaking is a complex phenomenon and has been quite extensively explored. The subsequent breakdown to a fully turbulent patch, along with the latter's development and (perhaps) eventual decay is not, however, well understood. We have been using HECToR resources to compute such flows, analysing both the transition-to-turbulence process and the fully developed turbulence in the patch.

Breakthrough in Fluid Mixing: Simulating Fractal-Generated Turbulent Flows

The first ever successful simulations of turbulence generated by fractal grids (see figure) have been performed on HECToR in 2008 and 2009. The size of these simulations is so large that they are impossible without High Performance Computing. Industries that need to create or minimise turbulence have an interest in this work. They include the chemical and process industries, which use turbulence for mixing, and the aerospace and automotive industries, which need to reduce noise, fuel consumption and pollutant emissions through the control of turbulent flows.

Optimisation of ONETEP Code

ONETEP is currently being used for a wide variety of applications by several UK and international research groups, including studies of protein-ligand interactions and self-assembly in semiconductor nanorods. Recent development work using HECToR and Imperial's CX1 machine has greatly improved the parallel efficiency of ONETEP, especially when studying systems of solids. Recently, calculations involving systems of up to 32,768 of crystalline silicon have been demonstrated and scaling efficiently up to over 256 cores.

CP2K : High Performance Quantum Chemistry on HECToR

CP2K is a freely available, open source application which uses Density Functional Theory (DFT) to perform ab-initio quantum mechanical calculations on a variety of physical systems. CP2K is heavily used on HECToR - around 50,000 CPU hours are used each month. Substantial performance improvements had been achieved: up to 30% on 256 cores for a small benchmark system of liquid water, and up to 300% on 1024 cores for a larger, non-homogenous system. These improvements are already available to users of HECToR and HPCx via the centrally installed versions of CP2K, and are available to CP2K users worldwide through the CVS repository on the CP2K website.

Reducing Noise Pollution from Aircraft

Aircraft pressure relief valves are used to protect the fuel tanks of wide-body civil aircraft from over-pressurization. The relief valve outlet is typically in the shape of a cylindrical hole, or cavity, cut in the underside side of the wing skin. At typical approach speeds of around Mach 0.3, the flow past the cylindrical cavity can become unsteady. This produces an unwanted tonal contribution to the airframe landing noise. A numerical investigation of this phenomenon was performed in consultation with Airbus France, as part of the EU programme AeroTraNet.

Cavity Flow Studies

As part of the UK 2nd Applied Aerodynamics Consortium and the EPSRC project EP/C533380/1, the Multi-Block solver of Liverpool was used to analyse flows around Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) configurations that include bays for stores and sensors. This complex flow problem is usually studied using idealised configurations of flows inside rectangular cavities exposed to a stream of high speed flow. This problem is complex due to the strong interactions between the shear layer formed across the cavity and the acoustic waves radiated from the downstream cavity wall.

The other migrant crisis: Thousands risk journey through Latin America

Thousands of migrants trek Latin America to US 04:34

Story highlights

  • A huge surge in undocumented migrant arrivals in Costa Rica
  • Migrants are traveling through Latin America to the United States
  • They are vulnerable to crime, hunger and human trafficking

Paso Canoas, Costa Rica (CNN)Yolanda ticks off the countries she and her husband have passed through in the last three months: Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and now Costa Rica. But she is no tourist.

"A lot of roads, lots of bus rides, and a lot of walking too," she tells CNN, agreeing to be interviewed but asking that we only use her first name and not show her face. "For a 7-month pregnant woman, that is a long, long time."
Yolanda says she is originally from Congo. She and her husband are among tens of thousands of migrants -- many from Africa and Haiti -- criss-crossing South and Central America trying to reach the United States.
Now they're stuck in the border town of Paso Canoas, Costa Rica, waiting for the travel documents that will let them enter the country and continue their journey northward.
"I hope to leave soon, for my turn to come fast so I can see a doctor," she says. "I don't want my baby to be born on the road."
Long an obligatory stop on an important trade and tourist route, Paso Canoas has seen an unprecedented influx of migrants trekking north in recent months.
The huge surge in undocumented arrivals is a logistical and humanitarian nightmare for the government of Costa Rica.
"At this moment Costa Rica is absolutely overwhelmed with our immigration situation and we're doing our best to protect the human rights of the people who are coming," said Mauricio Herrera Ulloa, the Costa Rican Communications Minister and point person for the migration crisis.
"No one was prepared or was thinking about the possibility that we would receive 10,000 people from Haiti or Africa."

Perilous journeys

Since April, when Costa Rica first started issuing transit visas for undocumented migrants, more than 18,000 people have crossed the border into the country. There are no comparative figures because the demand simply wasn't there in previous years so the visas didn't exist, officials say.
It is a situation that is being replicated in border towns throughout the Americas.

PDP crisis deepens as 23 state chairmen endorse Sheriff

PDP crisis deepens as 23 state chairmen endorse Sheriff

Despite efforts at reconciling warring factions in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party is still falling deeper into crisis.

The battle between National chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee, has again been further ignited as 23 state chairmen on Thursday pledged their allegiance to Sheriff.

With this, the battle has moved to another level as it was previously believed that most governors under the party’s platform, and by extension, the party hierarchy in such states, were in support of Makarfi.

The 23 chapter chairmen of the party while announcing their support for Sheriff, also stated that they were in agreement with the recommendations made by the Governor Seriake Dickson Peace and Reconciliation Committee for a unified national convention to hold not later than August this year.

The 23 state chairmen made their decision known in a communique they released after their meeting in Abuja on Friday night.

In the communique, copies of which were sent to newsmen on Saturday, the chairmen said the lingering crisis in the party has become very worrisome, adding that it would affect the future of the party if not urgently resolved, more importantly as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the 2019 election timetable.

Yunusa Suleiman, the Federal Capital Territory PDP chairman, while reading the communique said that his colleagues resolved to support Sheriff because of the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which authenticated him as the party’s substantive national chairmen.

According to Suleiman, the support for Sheriff was without prejudice to the ongoing appeal initiated against the chairman by Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee faction of PDP.

He assured that they were going to follow whatever the outcome of the case at the Supreme Court will be.

Sheriff and Makarfi have been engaging in a war of words over who between them wants to destroy the party.

Sheriff holds that Makarfi’s insistence for him to resign is so that he will destroy the party, while Makarfi and his supporters have constantly accused Sheriff of working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy PDP.

BREAKING NEWS From BNCPals
A 16-year-old girl is accused of shooting her friend and with the help of a 22-year-old man, and left her body at the side of Ziegler Road in Orlando, Florida.
The body of 15-year-old Melanie Mesen Medina was found at approximately 8.30am on 11 April by a member of the public who noticed the teenager's body lying at the side of Ziegler Road, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
The dead girl was fully clothed and showed signs of trauma, say deputies. They believe she was left there during the night.
A passer-by said "I think it was just convenient for them. It was a location they could go, they felt they could dump the body without being discovered by others,.
The 16-year-old girl has admitted to shooting the young woman. OCSO held a media briefing on the homicide investigation."
An anonymous tip-off from Crimeline which was received on 12 April alerted detectives to 22-year-old Ramsys Cruz-Abreu. When police came to his apartment, Abreu was trying to escape in a black Acura which had a bullet hole in the windshield and a handgun on the front seat, Reporter said.
Abreu was taken into custody and questioned by police. He told law officials that he, Medina and the 16-year-old girl were in the car when the teenager shot Medina inside the vehicle.
The 22-year-old was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and is being held at the Orange County Jail.
Police questioned the 16-year-old female and she confessed that she had shot Medina, who was a friend of hers. The shooter has not been named as she is a minor.
According to officials, the teenage girl is "somewhat cooperative". She is in the custody of her parents and not currently under arrest. The state attorney's office is determining the appropriate charges.
The investigation is ongoing to ascertain when happened inside the car that led to the shooting of Medina.

There’s a town in America where there is no Wi-Fi - and no smartphones

Imagine travelling back in time 30-odd years, to a point where people didn’t spend the whole day staring at their phones and swiping at Facebook.

But you don’t actually need a time machine to get there: a small American town has no smartphones (in fact, no mobiles at all), no Wi-Fi, and no radioVoice of America revealed in a video feature this week.

Green Bank has a population of 143, and is known as the Quietest Town in America – and its residents enjoy the enforced lack of technology, describing the town as an ‘oasis’.

MORE: British schoolboys caught stealing items from Auschwitz fined £400

The reason for the ‘radio silence’ is the nearby Robert C Byrd Green Bank telescope — a 485-foot sensitive radio instrument which listens for distant signals.

The telescope can pick up signals as faint as ‘about a billionth of a billionth of a millionth of a watt’, experts say.

Local store owner Sherry, ‘We’ve never really had it. We do it the old-fashioned way.’

GET TO KNOW WHAT CLAUDIO FERNANDEZ-ARAOZ SAID WHEN HE WAS INTERVIEWED ABOUT HIS BOOK

Amazon Exclusive: Q&A with Author Claudio Fernández-Aráoz

Q: Can you define great people decisions?
A: Great people decisions are great appointments, whether promoting someone from within or hiring someone from outside.Great people decisions produce extraordinary job performance, great personal development, and strong organizational morale.

Q: What inspired you to write this book?
A: After more than 20 years of global practice as an executive search consultant I became convinced that nothing is more important for our career success than making great people decisions, because everything we achieve as managers will depend on the people we’ve chosen. In addition, having traveled many times around the world as a consultant and a speaker, meeting thousands of CEOs, senior executives, middle managers, and young professionals, I realized two things: First, the most successful leaders are incredibly focused on people decisions. Second, most of us find these decisions extremely hard, and are quite clueless about the best practices.

Q: Why are these decisions so hard?
A: Great people decisions are very hard because we have the wrong brain and the wrong education. When making people decisions, we fall pray into a series of unconscious psychological biases, such as surrounding ourselves with similar people with whom we feel naturally comfortable. Many of these biases were very effective for our primitive ancestors, but they are no longer useful for building great teams which require complementary and highly sophisticated skills. On top of this, most of us have not studied how to make great appointments, despite their crucial importance.

Q: But can you actually learn how to make great people decisions?
A: Of course you can! In spite of what most people think, making great appointments is not an art or the result of an intuition or a gut feeling. It is a craft, and a discipline, that can be learned and should be learned for our career success.

Q: How can you measure the impact of great people decisions?
A: For knowledge-intensive jobs, the difference between the productivity of an average worker and a top performer can be in the range of 1,000% or more. That is the value of making great people decisions! At the organizational level, they are the foundational condition for building lasting greatness, and the most important controllable factor for company value.

Q: What would be your three recommendations to master these decisions?
A: They are about awareness, knowledge, and discipline. My advice would be to:

1) Avoid the usual traps – These include, among others, postponing difficult decisions, overrating capability, making snap judgments, branding, saving face, sticking with the familiar, and going with the crowd.

2) Learn the best practices – The good news is that there is a proven, step-by-step process, to master these decisions. The best practices are rigorous, yet simple and accessible. They cover the whole spectrum from deciding when a people change is needed, what to look for in a candidate, where and how to find the best candidates, how to assess them, how to attract and motivate the best, and how to successfully integrate them in the new job.

3) Invest enough time – As one CEO has put it, we spend 3% of our time recruiting, and then we need to spend 75% of the time managing our recruiting mistakes! It is hard to think about any other activity where the combination of awareness, knowledge, and discipline would have a higher return in terms of personal and organizational success.

JOKE TIME

Most times i wonder why we some human beings act like lower animals at times.
Though we are also animals, but we need to maintain our high class existence as higher animals (primates).
But even at that, we still behave as the lower class animals. How can a full grown knowledgeable human being lay himself/herself so - so low to sleeping with dogs, horses, goats, pigs, maybe ants and rats sometimes? huh?
It's only animals like horses that can sleep with horses too Only animals like dogs can sleep with dogs too only animals like goats and pigs can sleep with goats and pigs respectively.
But if human beings who are supposed to be sleeping with fellow human beings start sleeping with dogs, horses, goats, and pigs etc. it means they are doing what those animals should do, therefore they are behaving like animals.
Please, let's give ourselves respect, tomorrow now if those animals start insulting you, you'll start complaining, you have already laid yourself so low to them nah, huh
 thanks for understanding...
